POLYCORP Receives Honourable Mention For Excellence in Green Building by Canada Green Building Council
Halifax, Nova Scotia – June 9, 2017 – Local developer and builder, POLYCORP, received Honourable Mention for its north end Halifax condominium project, Q Lofts, in the category of Excellence in Green Building – New Construction at the 2017 Canada Green Building Council (CaGBC) National Conference and Showcase.
The CaGBC annual Leadership Awards recognize individuals and organizations that show outstanding leadership in the industry, and those who have made a significant contribution to advancing green building in Canada. This year’s event was held in Vancouver and is the largest green building event in Canada.
Q Lofts was nominated for this award by Jordan MacDonald, President of ThermalWise, Atlantic Canada’s building performance consulting company. “Q Lofts is by far the most energy efficient and green multi-unit building in Atlantic Canada. POLYCORP is showing other developers in the region what can be done and is helping move the market towards more high-performance green buildings.”
Some submission details:
MacDonald explained in his submission how every aspect of Q Lofts design minimizes environmental impact. Building materials and techniques were chosen with a close eye to environmental impact on long-term durability. Insulating Concrete Form (ICF) construction exterior walls, triple-glazed windows and thermally broken balconies ensure minimal heat loss. Energy from hot air, normally discharged from a building, is instead extracted and re-used.
A high efficiency heat pump system heats and cools the building using a high mass radiant floor distribution system and also heats domestic hot water. Circulator pumps have ECM motors and run
on variable frequency drives. Outdoor air is supplied to the condos through a high-efficiency energy recovery ventilator.
Further details of the submission outlined the use of recycled materials, LED and CFL lighting, high-efficiency appliances, low-VOC hard flooring and paints, and formaldehyde-free cabinetry and trim materials throughout the building. To reduce and reuse water, Q Lofts is equipped with low-flow fixtures, a landscape requiring little-to-no irrigation, and it is expected that 100% of the toilet water supply requirements will be fulfilled with rainwater collected from the rooftop and not from the municipal
POLYCORP principal Peter Polley states, “We see energy as a valuable resource that needs to be managed and optimized through smart design choices. That’s why we chose to strive for LEED Platinum certification for Q Lofts. This building demonstrates an integrated energy system – not a group of unrelated equipment and elements. Our team is thrilled to have received recognition for the strides we’ve made in green building.”
CaGBC Regional Director, Atlantic Chapter, Lara Ryan, has this to say about the honourable mention, “The CaGBC Atlantic Chapter is proud to see POLYCORP showing leadership among developers in Atlantic Canada when it comes to green building. They know, like many other developers in other parts of Canada, that not only does this have a positive impact on our environment but it makes good business sense. We congratulate POLYCORP for its innovation and leadership.”
Q Lofts is located at 5662 Roberts Street, Halifax.
